We think differently here at MSS and will provide the essential training that you require, not a mis-match of courses patched together and called Anti-Piracy.

We have written our course to encompass the Guidance issued to UK Flagged Shipping by the Department for Transport on the Use of Armed Guards to Defend Against the Threat of Piracy in Exceptional Circumstances.

During our 5-day course based in Glasgow, candidates will receive training from ex UK Special Forces instructors, and ex Merchant Navy officers with over 40 years’ experience between them. We will focus on the high delivery of specialist security and maritime training, with the following certificates presented on successful completion of the course:

STCW78, as amended, Reg. VI/1 Section A-VI/2.1.1 This one day MCA approved course is designed to give all persons going to sea the essential basic knowledge of survival equipment, survival principles and techniques that can be applied to maximise their chances of survival in the event of a marine casualty. Training consists of theoretical classroom work which is then enhanced by “Wet Drill” exercises.

STCW78, as amended, Reg. VI/1 Section A-VI/1 2.1.3 This one day MCA approved course gives all persons intending to go to sea a basic knowledge of the immediate action to be taken upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency on board ship. Assessment is by direct observation, oral questioning and simulated scenarios.

STCW 78, as amended, Reg. VI/1 Section A-VI/2.1.4 This half day MCA approved course will give all persons intending to go to sea a basic induction in safety procedures and accident prevention and to familiarise them with the employment conditions and working environment on board merchant vessels. Assessment is by direct observation, oral and written questioning and simulated scenarios.

MCA Fire Safety / Boatmasters Fire Fighting (1 day)

This one-day MCA approved course is designed to provide candidates with the appropriate training to enable them to enhance fire safety onboard a ship, to give them the knowledge of how fire starts and the procedures to follow and to ensure that candidates are confident of the procedures to follow in the event of fire onboard. The course will include both practical and theory training. There will be a short exam on completion of the training.

The course will include:

  • Understanding the initiation, growth and spread of fire and explosion.
  • The actions required on the discovery of fire.
  • The actions required in the event of fire alarm activation.
  • Fire fighting equipment onboard
  • The use of fire fighting equipment onboard.
  • Fire prevention measures onboard
  • Correct methods for casualty search and rescue.

On successful completion of the training candidates will be issued with a Boatmasters Licence Fire Fighting Certificate.

Maritime Security Operative (2 days)

With the increase in piracy in shipping there is a growing demand for highly trained security personnel. This 2-day course provides Maritime Security professionals with the minimum requirements as outlined in the DFT guidelines. This course can be completed as part of a 5 day STCW package or individually. The course will include both practical and theory training. The course will include:

This course is a step up from basic first aid, this qualification is based on providing immediate medical support to a casualty before the arrival of qualified medical assistance.
The immediate aid provided can make the difference between life and death. This course involves both practical and theory training.

Ship Security Officer (3 days)

Ship Security Officer/ Proficiency in Designated Security Duties This 3-day course covers security onboard the vessels and whilst in port. This course includes the minimum requirements for the issue of certificate of proficiency for ship security officers. The requirements are outlined in the STCW Code and the ISPS Code.

The course will include:

  • Candidates must maintain and supervise the implementation of a ship security plan.
  • Assess security risk, threat and vulnerability.
  • Ship inspections.
  • Proper operation of equipment.
  • Security awareness and vigilance.

Upon successful completion of the training candidates will receive a certificate of Proficiency for Ship Security Officers.

An additional element to the Elementary First Aid certificate which will be delivered by highly experienced Ex-Special Forces medics, and will focus on timely life saving techniques.

Basic Fire Awareness (half-day)

Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (3 days)

This 3 day course is designed to give those seeking/requiring Certificates of Competence, able seafarers, UK watch ratings and other with specified survival duties onboard the essential education and training in fire prevention and fire fighting meeting the knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out in the STCW code.

This course will involve practical and theory training and will include;

  • Fire theory
  • Causes of ignition
  • On board safety
  • The conditions required for fire
  • Methods to extinguish fire
  • The spread of fire
  • Classes of fire

The practical session will include;

  • Carrying out the initial actions on discovering a fire
  • Identifying the environment
  • Correctly using portable and mobile fire extinguishers
  • The use of hoses, nozzles and hose equipment
  • Extinguishing different types of fire
  • Testing and using BA equipment

Upon successful completion all candidates will be issued with a Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Certificate.
